Story Lab Week 12

Chapter Two of Empoword

I am definitely not a writer, and not interested in creative writing in the long term. However, I enjoyed reading this chapter because it helped to define and simplify some of the basic terminology of writing and reading. For instance, the discussion of "scope" was helpful in understanding that sometimes, focusing on a smaller subject can make for a better story.

I think this kind of content is one reason why I prefer in-person classes. While this class is generally very interactive (writing stories and commenting on others' stories), reading a chapter of instructions can feel really dry. It would probably be more fun to discuss some of the activities in this book with a classmate. For instance, coming up with a short story using a non-traditional plot structure could be a cool group activity. Just reading about plot structure.... Not so much. That said, this will be a really practical reference guide for any time I'm doubting my story-telling choices!

  1. Hey Natalie,

I agree that it is a setback of online classes to not have as much interaction. Just doing things on your own can be repetitive and dull. It would be interesting to see what discussions would be like in a class like this. I bet it would be less dry than just reading about just reading about how to write. A group project would be fun. I wonder if there could be a way to do something like that in an online class? Some type of teamwork could make things interesting.
